In 2009, when the market dropped and the United States economy took a nose dive, many, many Americans lost their jobs and homes and retirement funds. Foreclosed homes were the normal.
Our family was affected that year. My brother lost his job and we lost our home. I remember walking through our home one day and this was right before all of this happened and I felt God speaking to my heart, "What would you do if you lost everything"? That question came right after our are was hit with an F5 tornado and many people lost their homes and all of their possessions. It was devastating for them and it was hard to drive by and see their homes ravaged by this beast. Our town took a direct hit.
After God spoke that question to my heart, I didn't like my answer. God was showing me how we were putting all our security in our jobs, money and home and we needed to remember God, our Provider.
Then the crash hit in our country and what I wrote above happened and there we were, my brother, my two sons, a friend who is like my daughter and myself. Packing up a truck and not knowing where we were going.
We ended up at my younger sister's home, living in her basement for six months. I felt so sorry for my brother because he tried and looked everywhere for a job but there was absolutely nothing out there.
God was teaching us a lesson. He was teaching us to depend on Him and not people, jobs, or money.
Also, He was teaching us to not be dependent on stuff. I can't even begin to tell you things I had to leave behind in that move because we ran out of room in the truck and our cars. TOO much stuff.
My brother got a job and we moved back to our home town.
The hard part now was finding a home. We were and still are renting a home. A small home. A small two bedroom, 2 bath home. My oldest moved out and got his own place but then my mom moved in when daddy got sick and months later died. We still have five people in this small house.
God was teaching us many lessons while living here. We purge our garage every spring and fall and haul stuff we haven't used in a year plus to the curb.
He also had me purge my clothes, ouch! I am a shoe freak more than clothes but I had to get rid of a lot of clothes. He convicted me of worrying too much about what I was going to wear to church and reminded me of why I go to church, to worship Him.
We are still in the process of looking for a bigger place but this time we are praying and waiting on God to direct us to the home He wants us to have and the waiting has been long and our attitudes have not been the best at times; but God convicts us when we start complaining and we repent and get back in line with God. :)
I am sure tornado victims, hurricane victims etc.. mourn the loss of their belongings but they are so thankful their families are still alive because after all, you can replace material things.
It's a hard lesson. Now, the government is shutdown AND its going to start affecting more and more Americans with each passing day. No death benefits for families of a soldier, after Oct. 17th, no S.S. checks are promised.
Scary times but times like this can remind us that God, not government, is our Provider.
Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh, the LORD is my provider. As it is said to this day, “In the LORD’s mountain it will be provided.” Gen. 22:14
The Lord is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. Ps. 23:1
Oh fear the LORD, you his saints, For there is no lack with those who fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing .Ps. 34:9-10
These all wait for you, That you may give them their food in due season. You give to them; they gather. You open your hand; they are satisfied with good. Ps. 104:27, 28
and the LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in dry places, and make strong your bones; and you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters don’t fail. Isaiah 58:11
My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7
Have a blessed day!
